Receives IADA 2026 Honourable Mention
An interior shaped by composition rather than enclosure, with light as both a spatial and a tectonic medium, is recognised in the Interior category.
Taiwanese practice EXISTENTIALISM ARCHITECTURE STUDIO (存在建築) has received an Honourable Mention in the Interior category of IADA 2026, the International Architecture & Design Awards, for Early Frost, a completed project in Taichung. The design was led by the studio’s design director, Lai Yang Chih.
Early Frost is conceived through a deconstructive approach, using composition rather than enclosure as the main tool for defining space. Displacement, interlocking and tension between volumes and planes establish boundaries and visual guidance without conventional walls. Circulation is set by the relative positions of architectural elements, so that movement unfolds as a sequence of spatial transitions rather than a linear path. Overlapping planes and shifted volumes create layered conditions in which users perceive depth, orientation and rhythm as they move, and the boundaries between zones remain perceptible yet fluid.
IADA 2026 was the fifth, jubilee edition of the International Architecture & Design Awards and brought together more than 800 participants. An international jury judged every project against published criteria, and the winners of this edition come from 53 countries.
“Early Frost is our exploration of spatial composition and everyday perception. Through volumes, planes and light, it lets people sense the layers and rhythm of space as they move through it. We are delighted that this attempt has been recognised by IADA, and we look forward to continuing to respond, through design, to the subtle relationship between people and space.”
— Lai Yang Chih (賴揚誌), Design Director
Translated from the original Chinese.
Light is a central spatial and tectonic medium throughout. Beyond creating atmosphere, it is introduced at several scales to articulate edges, intersections and end points, making joints, transitions and structural relationships legible. As light conditions change, the relationship between material and structure is continually reread, giving the space a restrained yet dynamic expression. The design avoids decoration and returns to the essentials of space-making, with proportion, composition and light in dialogue. A grey and white palette forms the backdrop, while accents of orange and deep brown mark key nodes, balancing calm with moments of tension and orientation.
EXISTENTIALISM ARCHITECTURE STUDIO (存在建築) is based in Taichung and works in both architecture and interior design. The studio aims to create spaces where spatiality, temporality, light, narrative context and sensory experience intertwine, and is keen to experiment with new materials, construction methods and vocabularies that express the spirit of the times. In its own words, it defines its existence through actions and choices, and its existence as designers through its designs.
